Rhythm Kids

Rhythm Kids Level 2 is an exciting music, movement, and drumming class for children in Kindergarten through second grade (ages 5 through 8). Children integrate and assimilate rhythm into their lives, as they:

  • learn multicultural drumming patterns;

  • develop new repertoire on various percussion instruments;

  • explore movement and dance while singing songs;

  • play games based on music and drumming;

  • have fun with a host of rhythm activities.

Rhythm Kids follows through on the Music Together® vision to help children complete the pathway of early childhood music development from birth through age 8. As part of the Rhythm Kids experience, children and their grownups can enjoy drumming play and practice sessions at home with the help of online play-along videos featuring Rhythm Kids creator Tom Foote.

Classes are for children K–2 (ages 5 through 8) and include:

  • 10 weekly, 45-minute classes

  • Animal Collection Songbook and CD each semester

  • Access to online video tutorials and play-alongs

  • A child–sized djembe drum

Children will:

  • Learn, create, discover and explore music, movement and drumming

  • Enjoy age-appropriate ways to play rhythm instruments (shakers, tambourines, etc.)

  • Explore traditional drumming patterns through animal names and movements

  • Experience drumming, song, and dance from around the world (Mali, Puerto Rico,

    Turkey, etc.)

  • Find new ways to connect mind, body, and voice through rhythm

  • Develop skill in improvising, soloing, conducting, composition, and improvisation

  • Participate in active musical games that are both enriching and totally fun!

This is an instrument-learning class, so your child will need a drum. A child–sized djembe drum is included in semester tuition. Tuition for the winter semester is $189, which includes 9 weeks of 45-minute classes, an animal collection songbook and CD, online video tutorials and play-alongs, and a djembe drum (for new families). If you already have a djembe drum, tuition will be $159. Siblings of a registered student are $90, with the option of purchasing an additional djembe drum for $30. There is a $10 registration fee for new families and a $5 returning family registration fee. Payment plans and a limited amount of scholarship money are available upon request.

Coming up this Winter is the Tree Frog Song Collection! The Tree Frog Collection contains energetic triple-meter rhythms inspired by Japanese Taiko drumming. We’ll explore these patterns in “Suzume Odori” (Sparrow Dance), as we adapt the intricate steps danced in festivals throughout Japan. “Canta Coqui” (Singing Frog) has two distinct song phrases that evoke the abundant Puerto Rican tree frogs singing and hopping everywhere! We’ll celebrate the beautiful rivers and mountains of Japan in “Tree Frog Song,” while learning a delightful Japanese hand-clapping game. And “Tree Frog Night” will give us a chance to experience a night in the life of a tree frog! All 18 song selections have been chosen and arranged specifically to support your child’s music development.
